Science Recruitment agency your new best friend

Science Recruitment agency your new best friend At some point in your job search, someone might have suggested to you that you try a recruitment agency. These are organisations that help client companies, small and large, fill temporary and permanent job roles. Perhaps youre familiar with some of the big ones,  Hays, Kelly Services?   You might  be less  aware of some of the smaller niche outfits though. But they are worth considering. Remember recruitment agencies  are driven by the need to fill vacancies.   Make sure you consider carefully what you want to do and don’t expect completely impartial careers advice. But consider also that recruitment consultants have a good understanding of the current job market and access to regional, national and international employers. So how can you best make use of their services? I spoke to two recruitment consultants â€" Victoria Walker, Team Leader at CK Science and James Windridge, Regional Manager  of SRG with 20 years of experience between them  about what you can  do to make best use of their services. This is the pick of what they had to say: 1. Get to know your specialist consultant: Whatever youre interested in, there are specialist agencies and consultants â€" you can use this site  to find them. According to James Windridge; “All of us have backgrounds in science industries so we can talk with science graduates about their interests and degree. Each consultant specialises in a certain area â€" food, chemicals, life sciences, etc. We can also talk to students about what area theyre interested in.” Victoria Walker of CK Science, commented; “In the chemical sector that I deal with, there are roles in regulatory affairs, technical sales, quality assurance, as well as data entry and auditing roles â€" a broad range.” 2. Keep the Dialogue Flowing: Check in regularly with your consultant or agency. Victoria Walker suggested; “If you check in regularly, approximately once a month (or straight away if you feel youre a perfect match or if something has changed with your circumstances), we get to know what sort of thing you are looking for and we are better able to feed back to you on your applications.” Try to get at least 10 minutes on the phone with a consultant who knows your target area when you sign up to an agency. Check in if you need more information on a job role, an opinion on your CV. But avoid being a pest! 3. Be flexible but honest: Being even a little more flexible with your job requirements can pay off in the long term. “Try and be as flexible as possible and consider relocating or driving a bit further if you can. Be realistic about salary £16k- £18k is more realistic for entry level roles in the chemical field than £20k- £25k at the moment.” On the other hand, Victoria suggested that graduates have a tendency to say yes to a job role when theyre not genuinely interested. Think carefully about your  concerns or reservations. Also check the job details to make sure youre eligible.  Whatever you do, if youre scheduled for an interview, think about the consequences before pulling out. “Graduates sometimes get cold feet before the interview and dont turn up. This is a shame â€" it gives a bad impression. Interviews are a great way to practise so you get more confident â€" you can also chat to people at the interview and other opportunities may present themselves.” 4. Consider the value of testing an employer out Agencies offer temporary opportunities that can lead to permanent roles. At SRG about 60% of temporary placements end up in offers of permanent employment. “Our temporary roles average 7 months in length due to the requirement for lab training so they offer a balance of stability and flexibility â€" if you don’t feel you fit in, then you don’t have to stay.” This means youre not locked in to a job that doesnt work for you. In addition, agencies are a source of jobs  not advertised elsewhere â€"   thats true of approximately 50% of SRG’s jobs! 5. Don’t rely on Agencies to do all the work Although recruitment consultants can be an excellent source of market knowledge and will give you feedback on your CV if you ask for it, don’t sit back and expect the roles to come to you without any work. According the James Windridge: “We will always review your CV against the criteria required for the job but we do send your actual CV to the clients so make sure you get evidence on your CV that relates to the job role.  Many students leave off important information â€" projects, research they have done. Also check spelling, grammar etc. Employers will reject candidates however much we push them if they get a bad CV. We do give free CV advice.” In addition, most employers are still looking for evidence of some work experience or areas where you have developed key skills. Victoria Walker again: “I recommend candidates do work shadowing, volunteer, get IT training, learn a language â€" anything that avoids gaps developing on your CV”. Our recent  blog  on what to do if you dont have an internship might help you to think of how you might use your time to boost your CV. The suggestions can apply just as well to what you do after university as to vacations. Remember an agency  can be part of your job search strategy , it shouldnt be the whole of it! 6. Agencies may be a good source of niche roles Although SRG has seen fewer graduate roles come onto its books in recent years, the demand for Chemistry graduates is still high. “Chemistry as a degree is more in demand, particularly as fewer universities offer a pure Chemistry degree now. But what I would say is that we are seeing more opportunities for Masters and PhD students, so I would encourage postdoc candidates to consider us as part of their job search strategy.” If you are a Chemistry Student looking for opportunities, you may find  CK Science Chemistry Careers pages  useful â€" they have industry overviews and case studies you can view.

Communication Lessons from the Field - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Communication Lessons from the Field - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career What are you really saying? New on the job, Alberta was asked to attend corporate sales training by her Manager. Eager to learn more about sales, Alberta anticipated that after class was over, she would witness an immediate improvement in her sales effort. Alberta conveyed after the fact that she learned many lessons on how to communicate with clients. But to her great disappointment, the lessons were negative in nature by having witnessed how not to communicate. Although Alberta was in a classroom situation, the following lessons she learned apply to client meetings: 1. No one holds greater or less importance than another The instructor clearly had favorites in class. For the most part, she favored a young athletic gentleman trying to make it in the corporate sales environment. The favoritism was shown in multiple ways including, verbal, facial and awarded prizes. In-between classroom sessions, students conveyed their dismay by the instructor’s flagrant favoritism. Translating this lesson to corporate meetings, should you ever have a meeting with the CEO at the table with his seemingly lower-level clerical help, treat each as if they are the CEO. Respect for everyone, no matter the position, will raise your like-ability and trust factors. Accordingly, more people will be inclined to purchase from you. 2. Respond appropriately to questions Alberta witnessed the instructor responding to a classmate by admonishing her in a loud, not so nice tone, saying, “No, No, No!” The response was perceived as if the instructor might be speaking to a two-year old rather than a mature adult. And no explanation was ever offered as to “Why” the answer was no. Additionally, the response not only offended the person asking the question, but the rest of the class members. On occasion prospective clients may ask you difficult questions. Should you not be certain which direction to begin your answer, the best response is to either ask, “What has been your experience with this”, or, “why are you asking the question so that I may fully understand the nuances included?” In this manner, you are provided additional information and understanding on how to answer. Your reply will be more in-depth and on target for the client needs. 3. Consistency Alberta witnessed the instructor consistently behaving negatively toward a few class members and wondered how many classes would take place until word got out that the behavior isn’t acceptable. Continually striving to understand your prospective clients’ background, experiences and goals, you will do a far better job in providing appropriate proposals that are met with appreciation. By the time a prospective client asks for a proposal, be aware they are not just shopping for the best price. They are expecting you to have listened well, captured their important details and translated all of it into a thoughtful proposal. A proposal request is a signal they want to purchase from you and also an underlying request to please do your best for them. Ultimately, receiving business is a thank you for listening well, taking the time to understand need, and having shown respect to everyone involved. These tips will help to uniquely set you apart from all of your competitors and serve to build your personal brand and reputation. In turn, you will see a steady increase in repeat business, referrals and testimonials, as well as lead you to the Smooth Sale! When Should You Go To Human Resources

When Should You Go To Human Resources It’s an exciting challenge to start a new job â€" especially if it’s your first experience of employment. There’s loads to remember and lots of people to get to know â€" and one of the most important people you’ll be meeting is your Human Resources manager, because their main aim is your welfare. You’re an asset to the company now, a crucial cog in its workings, so it’s important that HR exists to make sure you, and your colleagues, are happy at work. Despite this, there’s sometimes some confusion about when it’s appropriate to approach the HR department. You might find yourself asking if your query is important enough, whether your complaint is justified or if there’s anything they can do to help. To help you out, below are five situations when it’s always relevant to go to Human Resources. 1) Issues with your manager, colleagues or customers: You’ll want to raise a grievance about someone who works with you if you feel you have been singled out, harassed or bullied â€" going to HR is a given. But did you know following recent changes to the equality act, it is possible to bring prejudice to light even if you are not discriminated against personally? If you feel someone’s been unfairly treated, whether because of sexuality, age, race or disability, you have the right to raise the issue with your company, even if you don’t share the characteristic that’s being discriminated against. ‘The long and short of it is this: if it’s offensive to anyone then it shouldn’t be in the workplace,’ says Kevin Orchard, a chartered HR manager from Cornwall, ‘And if you feel awkward about addressing it with the person, you can ask HR to mediate or even raise the issue via a third party. It might even be possible to remain anonymous.’ 2) Changes to personal circumstances: If you need to request to take time off at short notice, reduce your hours, work flexibly, or have queries regarding maternity or paternity leave, then HR will be your first port of call. They’ll liaise with your boss and try to make your schedule work for everyone. 3) Personal entitlements: Approach your HR manager when you begin your job and get to know the details of your organisation’s benefits package. What is the company doing about the forthcoming compulsory pension contributions? Can you get involved in a cycle to work scheme? Can you get a free eye test if you work on a computer? Is there a bonus this year? 4) Seek opportunities: If you want to progress in a certain position, then HR can help. This could be through internal training or job shadowing. If it’ll help the company and give your role greater flexibility, it’s quite possible that they’ll go for it considering the financial climate. Alternatively, you may wish to partake in external training. Ask for options for potential part funding, or if the company will at least give you time off to complete the course (more likely if it’s work related). 5) Just to vent! Sometimes it’s good to let off steam with an objective third party. Bottling up feelings about your job, your colleagues or the way your employers run their business won’t help anyone. You might think your HR manager won’t be interested but you’re providing a valuable insight into the mood of the workforce and the running of the company. They’ll probably value your feedback and thoughts as much as you enjoy getting it off your chest. Kevin says, ‘It’s better than exploding at a colleague. It could exacerbate the problem and even lead to a grievance procedure. Who knows, we might even be able to solve the issue that’s making you stressed!’ You may also want to check out Job Satisfaction and Happiness in the Workplace. Skills on Resume - Writing is Not Necessarily the Most Important Skill

Skills on Resume - Writing is Not Necessarily the Most Important SkillWhat's the most important skill that I can put on my resume when trying to get my dream job? Many people would answer, 'the ability to write' or, 'writing skills on resume.' The truth is, no matter what else you have or can do for a company, it is absolutely true that the ability to write something down can be an asset. Yes, it may not be the most important skill to have on your resume, but it can be a valuable thing. Many people feel intimidated when they start to write their own resume. Writing a resume is one of the first things that they will do in their new life as a professional. They have to be confident and secure in their abilities before they can even begin to write anything. Now, don't despair! As I mentioned above, the ability to write can be a valuable skill. This does not mean that you should be writing in any particular style or that you should write anything except the truth.Writing skills can make a huge difference when you are applying for jobs. If you lack the skills, employers will go with somebody else who has the right skills. However, if you have the skills and are simply nervous about writing, there are many resources that can help you.First, you can get some books on how to write. For example, there are several guides for writers that will tell you how to write an effective resume and cover letter. If you are not a writer, you can also go to Career Builder or LinkedIn and find writing skills on resume articles, skills on cover letters, and everything else related to writing for jobs. The best way to improve your resume is to take notes. After you read it, take notes of what you liked and what you didnot like. You should be able to put these notes into bullet points or a word document. When you are making an MS Word document, make sure that it is organized properly so that it is easy to read. Also, keep your resume and cover letter short and easy to read. Your resume is no t a sales page and should not be more than one page.On the other hand, you should also make sure that you have skills on your resume that are relevant to the job that you are applying for. Also, you should apply for the job that you are really interested in. This is another way of improving your resume writing skills.

5 Adventurous Career Choices - CareerAlley

5 Adventurous Career Choices - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. There are so many career choices. Many jobs are well paid simply because there are certain risks that cannot be avoided. The risks themselves are in a bizarre way what attracts people to the work, because the financial rewards are high for such risky work. So if you are looking for a career that is adventurous, challenging, exciting, and a bit risky take a look at the careers listed below. Some risks are obvious because they pose immediate danger, others a lot less so. Some health-related issues only present themselves years after a worker has retired, but their cause is directly related to the damage done in their previous career. Deep-sea Trawling Fishers and related fishing workers catch and trap various types of marine life. Generally speaking, the fish they catch are for human food and animal feed. Requirements, Job Outlook and Salary: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median salary is $35,000 and no formal education is required. Typically, training is on the job. The number of jobs available for this career are on the decline. Risks: This carries with it a very real risk of drowning, or on-board injury due to the unstable nature of a ship in high winds. Roughly 5 to 7 workers in 1000 die each year trawling at sea. To put this in perspective, this is a morbidity rate four times higher than mining, and FORTY times higher than manufacturing. The weather is the biggest danger to workers on-board, and how quickly it can change. Factor in tiredness and exhaustion, and things can turn disastrous in seconds. Deep Sea Fishing [easyazon_link asin=083688888X locale=US new_window=default nofollow=default tag=caree07-20 add_to_cart=default cloaking=default localization=default popups=default]Deep-Sea Fishing (Cool Careers)[/easyazon_link] Mining Mining involves the extraction of ore, coal, or other minerals from the earth. This is typically done by cutting, blasting, or otherwise working and removing the rock to get to whatever it is that is being extracted. Requirements, Job Outlook and Salary: The median pay is $84,000 per year and, depending on the specific job, can require a bachelors degree. Opportunities for this occupation ares expected expand at a 12% rate over the next 10 years. Risks: Most people associate the dangers of mining with pit collapses and explosions, but there are also long-term health issues related to this career choice. Coal-workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) black lung disease is a common long-term illness many miners face, long after they retire. Over the years, their lungs build up tiny fragments of coal dust that lead to breathing problems. This book is all about Mining jobs [easyazon_link asin=B009EPL57E locale=US new_window=default nofollow=default tag=caree07-20 add_to_cart=default cloaking=default localization=default popups=default]Careers in mining geology and management, university governance and teaching : transcript, 1970-1971[/easyazon_link] Roofer Pretty self explanatory roofers repair and install the roofs on buildings using a variety of materials, including shingles, asphalt, and metal. Requirements, Job Outlook and Salary: The median pay is $35,000 per year and does not require any formal education. Training is typically on the job. Opportunities for this occupation are expected expand at a 11% rate over the next 10 years. Risks:The dangers associated with roofing are fairly obvious. However, roofers cant simply be harnessed in all day they need to be mobile. Therefore, training and experience are the biggest allies of a roofer. Still, accidents happen, and falls can be fatal or produce life-changing injuries. Again, the inherent risks with roofing are part of the appeal roofers command good pay because of the risks involved. Truck Driver Truck driving has a broad range of driver types (Heavy and Tractor trailer, delivery trucks, etc.). Requirements, Job Outlook and Salary: The median pay is $38,000 per year (much depends on years of experience and the type of truck driven) and does not require any formal education. Training is typically on the job with the exception of tractor trailer driving which generally requires some formal training. Opportunities for this occupation are also expected expand at a 11% rate over the next 10 years. Risks: The slow lane of any motorway sometimes resembles a freight-train an endless line of trucks fulfilling deliveries. The truck drivers greatest risks are accidents caused by their own tiredness. Despite regulation to prevent such fatigue, many drivers are working to tight deadlines and have to drive very long distances. Even if theyre taking their regulated breaks, exhaustion can creep up on them. One of the less obvious health issues is burn-out that can lead to prolonged periods of unemployment. Police Officer Police officers swear an oath to protect and serve the citizens they represent. They are responsible for enforcing the law by arresting criminals and detecting and preventing crimes. Requirements, Job Outlook and Salary: The median pay is $57,000 per year and does not require a college education (although degrees in law enforcement can help). Training is typically as a recruit through a formal police officer candidate school. Opportunities for this occupation are also expected expand at a 5% rate over the next 10 years. Risks: A front-line police officer has to deal with all kinds of risks to his or her health. From assault to car accidents (in pursuit situations), often a police officer must deliberately put himself in harms way as part of his job. Its also not uncommon for officers to suffer from stress and depression due to the nature of their work. Want a job as a police office? This book will help. [easyazon_link asin=076892717X locale=US new_window=default nofollow=default tag=caree07-20 add_to_cart=default cloaking=default localization=default popups=default]Master The Police Officer Exam: Complete Test Prep to Jump-Start Your Career (Petersons Master the Police Officer Exam)[/easyazon_link] Is There Such a Thing as a Hazard-free Job? Even the most innocuous-looking job can have its hazards if it contributes to an unhealthy lifestyle. They keyword is lifestyle theres no reason why a police officer cant mitigate or even cancel out the hazards they face by dealing with them effectively and appropriately. Needless to say though, risk is a part of everyday life and you cant possibly avoid all risks, but it is certainly worth considering when looking at your career options.
